Okay. So, you know, that feeling standing there, presentation coming up, wishing you could just magically remember everything you wanted to say. What if I told you we could ditch the sweaty note cards for good and unlock the power of storytelling?

That's what we're diving into today. The Loki method from Martin Kloss's book, People, Place, Story. Oh, it's a fascinating technique, really. Instead of trying to memorize a bunch of bullet points, it taps into something our brains are already good at remembering places.   Okay. Now I'm intrigued. Tell me more. You got it. But before we get into the how Kloss starts by explaining why those traditional notes are actually holding us back from giving truly engaging presentations.

And he's not wrong. Have you ever watched someone glued to their notes just reading off of them is painful?

Exactly. It's painful to watch, and I bet it's even more painful to be the one stuck reading.   Kloss argues that it all comes down to how our brains are wired. We're hardwired for stories, for journeys. Notes just chop those stories up into these sterile disconnected bullet points. It's like the difference between listening to someone recount an exciting trip and reading a packing list. That's a great way to put it. And because of that disconnect,   those notes end up hindering our delivery. We get lost in our heads scrambling for the next point, and that all important connection with the audience,   gone. So how does the Loki method help us break free from that packing list presentation style and actually enjoy the journey? Well, it's all about transforming that journey from a list of bullet points to a walk down memory lane. Imagine yourself strolling down a familiar street. As you walk, each landmark becomes a trigger for a different part of your presentation.  

Okay. I'm picturing my walk to work. There's that coffee shop on the corner where I always grab my latte. Perfect. Maybe the aroma of those freshly ground coffee beans reminds you to start with that engaging anecdote, the one that really gets your audience hooked. Then you pass that quirky statue you always walk by. You mean the one with the pigeon that's always perched on its head? Exactly.   That statue with its feathered friend becomes your cue for your company's mission statement.   You can practically hear the pigeon cooing as you passionately describe your company's goals. And that bakery, a little further down, the one with the irresistible

smell of fresh bread. I can almost smell those croissants now. Exactly.

That delicious aroma triggers your memory of the killer sales figures for q three.   Remember that feeling of success, that sense of accomplishment.

So instead of memorizing a script word for word, I'm attaching key ideas and even emotions to these sensory details.   That statue with the pigeon becomes more than just a statue. It's a reminder of our company's mission and the passion behind it. Precisely.

And the more details you can visualize sounds, smells, even the emotions you associate with those spots, the stickier those memories become. It's like creating a map, but instead of roads and buildings, you have anecdotes, key figures, and compelling arguments all anchored to vivid locations.

Kloss calls this creating a Loki route. It's your own personalized memory palace, but it's built on a route that's uniquely meaningful to you. And it doesn't have to be a street. Right? Yeah. I mean, Kloss mentions using his favorite jogging path. What if my ideal Loki route is a mental stroll through my childhood home or even a hike in the woods?

Absolutely.   The key is that it resonates with you, that it's a place, you know, like the back of your hand. Kloss   actually encourages us to tap into those spaces that are rich in personal meaning places where memories already come alive effortlessly.   He even suggests adding in imagined elements if that helps. So if your big idea needs to be announced by a marching band on your route, go for it. Now that's what I call a memorable presentation.

But this also makes me think about those of us who might not have the most, let's say, visually stimulating routes. What if my daily commute is literally just gray buildings and bumper to bumper traffic? That's where getting creative comes in.

Kloss emphasizes that even seemingly mundane locations can be transformed with the right perspective.   Maybe that nondescript building has a specific texture on its wall you can focus on, or there's a particular sound that always occurs at that spot, a busker playing a dog barking.   It's about finding those unique details that make your route come alive.

So even a boring commute could become a hotbed of memory triggers with the right mindset.   This is making you rethink those daily rides on the train.   But let's talk about the actual presentation itself.   I'm imagining feeling excited to mentally walk my Loki route instead of dreading the experience of presenting.

Exactly. That's one of the most powerful aspects of the Loki method. You're no longer tethered to your notes worrying about what comes next or if you skipped a point.   Instead, you're free to be present in the moment, to react to the audience, to bring in those spontaneous moments of humor or insight   that make a presentation truly captivating.   It's like the difference between reading from a script and actually embodying the story you're telling. Yes. And that makes all the difference in how you come across to your audience. You're no longer just delivering information. You're sharing an experience

connecting with them on a deeper level. This has been yeah. This has been really eye opening. I could already feel myself getting less anxious about my next presentation just picturing my own Loki route. Any last tips for our listeners before they step up to the podium, or should I say step onto their mental journeys? I love that stepping onto your mental journey. And you've hit on a key point. Kloss emphasizes that finding your ideal Loki route is really a process of experimentation.

Don't be afraid to try different routes, add or remove landmarks,   play with what feels right for you. Maybe your childhood home works for one presentation, but for another, it's your favorite hiking trail.   And here's the best part. It's not about achieving some kind of flawless word for word memorization.

It's about connecting with your story on a deeper level, and through that connection, connecting more powerfully with your audience. So ditch the note cards, find your Loki route, and unlock that inner storytelling superhero. I like it. It's amazing what we can accomplish when we tap into the natural power of our own minds.
